RaceTrac accelerates warehouse operations and drives user adoption with Blue Yonder

L'entreprise

Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, family-owned RaceTrac, Inc. is one of the largest privately held companies in the United States, serving guests since 1934. The company’s retail brands include more than 850 RaceTrac® and RaceWay® retail locations, with plans to expand.

Le défi commercial

RaceTrac’s ongoing growth increased complexity across its distribution network. Its previous warehouse processes made modest operational changes time-consuming, slowing the company’s ability to respond to evolving business needs. Warehouse route allocation represented a major concern, as RaceTrac’s existing approaches could benefit from greater efficiencies and warehouse staff bandwidth. Helping warehouse associates transition away from familiar legacy processes was another important priority. Multiple activities required movement across numerous interfaces, adding complexity to change and extending learning curves during modernization efforts.

La solution

RaceTrac selected Blue Yonder Warehouse Management (WMS) and Warehouse Labor Management (WLM) to simplify distribution center workflows, improve labor planning, and increase visibility across daily operations. Blue Yonder WLM works alongside WMS to help RaceTrac optimize labor planning, forecast work requirements, apply more consistent performance standards and identify opportunities for continuous improvement across daily warehouse tasks.

"I'm excited about helping RaceTrac improve the ordering process for our stores. With Blue Yonder, we can make it easier to keep our stores stocked with what we need and make our customers happier. And in the end, we're making ourselves more efficient as a business."

–William Beverly, Senior Manager, Enterprise Applications, RaceTrac

Responding faster to warehouse needs

In convenience retail, warehouse execution directly affects store readiness. Distribution teams must coordinate replenishment across product categories with different handling requirements, from grocery and general merchandise to refrigerated and frozen items, while also managing high-volume beverage movement and time-sensitive store deliveries. As RaceTrac expanded, improving the speed and flexibility of warehouse processes became essential to keeping its stores supplied efficiently.

With Blue Yonder, RaceTrac moved toward a more configuration-driven environment and can now implement routine warehouse workflow updates much faster, reducing turnaround from roughly 30 days to about one week.

“Perhaps one of the biggest things that stood out about Blue Yonder was the out-of-the-box capabilities and a lot of the processes that we were able to implement without having to do anything on the back end,” says Beverly.

Simplifying warehouse workflows for everyday users

RaceTrac’s legacy systems required users to move through multiple screens and processes to complete common distribution center activities, including allocation, replenishment preparation, picking coordination and shipping execution.

Blue Yonder WMS simplified how warehouse staff manage and complete everyday tasks. Automated allocation helps reduce manual preparation by organizing work before daily waves begin, giving teams a clearer path into replenishment, picking and shipping. Additionally, Racetrac’s warehouse floor activities can now be completed through significantly simpler interfaces.

Shipping activities have also benefited from streamlined execution. Instead of repetitive manual interactions across separate processes, dispatch operations have become substantially more direct and efficient.

Optimizing labor planning and warehouse performance

RaceTrac also needed a better way to plan labor and evaluate warehouse performance. In its previous environment, managers relied on manual effort and customized reporting to understand work progress, staffing needs and productivity trends.

Blue Yonder WLM gives RaceTrac more structured insight into labor requirements and performance. Managers can use forecasts to estimate completion times for daily peaks, align staffing with expected workloads, and support transportation coordination. Industrial engineering teams can also evaluate workflows more consistently, using operational data to identify where processes can be improved.

“The Blue Yonder Warehouse Labor Management solution has allowed us to drive change to be more efficient in our warehouses. And it's allowed our engineers to say, ‘how can we change the way we work and how can we improve our processes?’ This is the driving force to make our customers happy,” says Beverly.
