Blue Yonder Network, Returns Management

Australia Post modernizes parcel logistics and returns experiences with Blue Yonder

L'entreprise

Australia Post is a government-owned corporation that serves as Australia’s primary postal and logistics provider. With more than 64,000 employees, over 4,100 post offices, and 12.8 million delivery points, the company manages one of the nation’s largest retail and delivery networks. Annually, Australia Post handles more than 2 billion pieces of mail, parcels, and e-commerce shipments.

Le défi commercial

Australia Post manages complex delivery and pickup networks, serving communities across a vast geographic area. The company needed to adapt as parcel volumes continue to grow while letter volumes decline. As e-commerce accelerates, retailers and customers increasingly expect faster, more reliable returns experiences. To keep pace, the company needed to reduce operational complexity, improve transparency, and create a more consistent returns process.

La solution

Australia Post is using Blue Yonder solutions to improve key parts of its parcel logistics operations, with a focus on returns and partner collaboration. Blue Yonder Returns Management provides the digital foundation for a simpler, more seamless returns process across consumers, retailers, and Australia Post. Blue Yonder Network provides the connected logistics layer for carrier collaboration and shared visibility across Australia Post’s supply chain partners. These combined capabilities help the company reduce manual coordination, support more consistent execution, and strengthen the parcel logistics ecosystem.

“Blue Yonder is helping us strengthen the capabilities behind a more modern parcel logistics network. Together, we’re improving how Australia Post supports retailers, consumers, and communities as their expectations continue to evolve.”

Modernizing logistics for changing customer needs

Australia Post’s transformation is shaped by the scale and complexity of its national role. As one of Australia’s most trusted institutions, the organization supports businesses, consumers, and communities nationwide while maintaining the reliability expected of an essential service provider. As e-commerce growth increases parcel volumes, Australia Post is seeing greater pressure on the digital and physical touchpoints that support delivery and returns experiences.

Returns create challenges for both retailers and consumers. When a customer sends something back, the retailer may incur additional handling costs, face delays in processing returned inventory, and risk losing future business if the return experience is not positive.

Supporting a simpler returns experience

With Blue Yonder Returns Management, Australia Post is replacing manual steps with a digital process that makes returns easier for consumers to initiate and track, while giving retailers earlier visibility into returned items.

For retailers, that visibility supports operational decisions tied to inventory availability, refunds, restocking, resale, and the post-purchase experience. It also helps retailers determine whether returned goods can re-enter the market, be sold through secondary channels, or be processed in ways that reduce unnecessary waste.

Consumers can start a return online, choose a convenient drop-off option, and complete a request in about two minutes. Australia Post is also exploring labelless return options. QR code-enabled digital validation would allow consumers to send an item back without printing a label or using designated return packaging, while helping Australia Post confirm the item’s origin and route it to the correct destination.

Earlier return visibility helps businesses using Australia Post’s network lower costs, build consumer confidence, and encourage repeat purchases by enabling faster refund and credit decisions once a return is registered, even before the item is physically received. Today, more than 500 businesses are using Blue Yonder Returns Management, with some onboarded in as little as two hours. Retailers have reported 92% satisfaction with the process, and the simpler returns model helps keep more parcel activity within Australia Post’s network.

Transforming parcel logistics for what comes next

Blue Yonder is helping Australia Post modernize key digital capabilities within its parcel logistics network. With Blue Yonder Returns Management and Blue Yonder Network, the company can simplify returns and support more consistent collaboration across its logistics ecosystem. These solutions help Australia Post reduce manual coordination and support rising parcel volumes as consumer and retailer expectations continue to evolve.

“With Blue Yonder as part of our transformation, we are continuing to strengthen how Australia Post serves retailers, consumers, and communities across Australia. The partnership helps us build the operational resilience and flexibility needed to keep improving the experience we deliver every day.”
